Virat won't leave captaincy till 2023 worldcup and after rohit will be close to retirement. Virat has to keep things simple instead of over complicating things too much and hope for best. He learnt the skills on the job with support from all those elite coaches and management staff at MI. He also saw failure up close and personal, so he had a chance to learn from it and become better. That possibly made him empathetic to other young-talented players facing similar situations. MSD was the same way to some extent. Also don’t forget the luck factor. Those 3 things are a perfect recipe that make a great captain. Kohli on the other hand never put a foot down in his career and it obviously takes a special cricketer to do something like that. He could do that because of his constant need to perfect himself. That probably drove him to become what he is today. However you need to be a little Self-obsessed to have that level of drive (I am using that word in a positive context). These kind of guys will not have time for other people’s emotions.That is what makes them ruthless. Most importantly he also doesn’t have the luck factor. I mean his team got caught by a still mediocre but in form Pakistan on an off day. The weather conditions became bowler friendly which turned Amir into a beast. on top of that there was a noball that gave a hack a second chance and he cashed it in a big way. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Same thing with the semifinals. If the match had gone 1 day instead of 2 India would have won comfortably. Once again his team got the worst possible conditions against one of the best swing bowlers in the world. Third he never evolved as a leader. Because of how good he was at what he did, he was just given the keys to the kingdom. That’s the difference between the 2. He had a much better performing team than Sachin again Dhoni had some brains around him with immense experience be it batsmen or bowlers who made some decisions easy for him + an ATG team + he himself was a good leader and groomed some players he believed in and more importantly most times backed the right horses. Sachin had fixing going around him by seniors + a pathetic team with some evolving players + a 2.5 men bowling attack + didn’t help that he was the only guy carrying the team so knowing the burden Sachin carried on himself he can’t sit and groom others. Even then when he was the senior member in the team always backed,supported and helped youngsters. Tactically yes Dhoni was/is one of the greatest Indian captains. Currently hands down Rohit. Is Indian captaincy Virat's personal property to not leave. You have not understood the agony and urgency of what all posters are trying to say in this thread and just stating what could happen. What needs to happen is what is being discussed. Otherwise, when we see the results, we will keep whining about Indian losses and keep giving blah blah blah reasons while ignoring the elephant in the room(which is VK's captaincy).
