Why is Wriddhiman Saha still getting selected for Team India?

What is the logic behind this? There is literally no reason at all to keep selecting this 40 year old tailender for the test team.

The guy has no future, he can’t score runs, he is injury prone and he is just blocking Pant’s spot.

The Indian team need to be looking ahead and towards the future with Rishabh Pant and other young keepers who will serve our test team on a very long term basis.

But I guess that is too much to ask from Captain Virus Kohli to show faith in youngsters!

He is still decent option to have. Can hold his own I believe. But primary reason is that there is no other keeper with a test cap. Its all about experience you see. The fact that Siraj and Saini have yet to make their test debuts is symbolic of this.

And this TM would rather bring KL Rahul as the next test keeper before giving any youngster gametime. Giving Pant matches is already a big enough headache for them.

May be because Pant has not lived upto his expectations in recent times.

He is the future no doubt , but he still has to prove that. Plus his confidence is probably at an all time low...what with a below average ipl from him.

Saha is fine if he is a backup in case Pant screws up . It also keeps him on his toes and keep him  grounded.

That said, if he is not the first choice keeper on the tour...then shame on TM.

Saha is back up for overseas tours & Pant is back up for home series. This in a nutshell tells you a lot about King Kohli & TM.

He was dropped from home tests 3 innings after hitting a 159 in Australia. Did not get the game even vs BD. His LOI form was used against him, with the captain saying Saha was the best keeper in the world (he hadn't played for 22 months) and getting him back for the home season. Then suddenly Pant was asked to keep in NZ with Saha injured. He naturally failed having hardly played Tests for nearly 7 months.

With Saha now being available, let's see if Kohli shows the guts to stick with Saha. He would not have imagine Pant getting a 100, that too in such imperious way. Personally, I do not want Pant to play under Kohli. He will do better under Rahane later in the series

Saha is only 36, not 40 or 37 as some other people are saying in other threads. He is still the best pure wicket keeper and even took a stunning catch as a fielder.  In extremely swinging conditions or extreme spin minefields, he is the safe bet 'keeper. Saha will retire in a year or two. Until then, it's good to have him in the squad as a backup and also to mentor Pant.

In minefields Saha s keeping is exemplary..and in home tests we need safe keepers .. india plays jadeja and ashwin at no 7 and 8 in home tests so there is enough depth in batting.. we need a keeper who can take a stunner or do a stumping off a half chance to prevent past episodes  of Kevin Pietersen ( mumbai) and Steven smith ( Pune) happening..

The writing on the wall is pretty clear. India can do with as many batting options as it can get. And you cant get someone as tailor made as Pant. His wicket keeping is pretty smooth, and he is very athletic against pace bowling. Not to mean that he is dud against spin.

And Saha did not do anything extraordinary to hold on to Pant's position. The other point being, Pant is chirpy and lively. One look at Saha and he gives you the feeling that his girlfriend has run away with his neighbour.

Best thing is for Saha to be given the full series. So far he hasn't played a full series in SENA. Let's see where he stands among the keepers after playing across the world and not just in Asia+WI.
