Austin 3:!6
So he was no.1 ODI batsman for 41 months but here comes a young guy from neighboring country that is not renowned of producing great batsmen has dethroned him. During his younger days, Virat had that fire in his belly. He used to hate getting out, wanted to be the best batsman in the world and constantly wanted to raise the bar higher. But in last couple of years he had mellowed down a lot - talking about process & how cricket is a team game, personal milestones don't matter as long as team wins etc. The fire and passion that made Kohli what he is today has been missing since 2019. Now that he is no longer no.1 batsman in any format, will the reality hit him and he will be motivated to work hard on his batting? Or he will continue with his 'already achieved all' attitude and talk about bakwaas process, team game etc.? Edited April 16, 2021 by Austin 3:!6 Link to comment
Adamant
After 2019 world cup or so i haven't seen the same fire in him. It looks like Cricket is now his second priority (family being the first ofcourse) Austin 3:!6 1 Link to comment
Norman
He has clearly lost the hunger post the debacle at Old Trafford against Matt Henry... Now it's just maintaining the status quo, winning random bilaterals, scoring a few "good" 70s and 80s once in 5 games with his PR doing the coverup job efficiently , acting "aggressive" on the field picking fights with the opposition players, advertising his brands on Instagram and at the end of the day collecting those billions and billions of Indian rupees.. I mean , would you really blame him? Cricspin, sorak, ShoonyaSifar and 1 other 4 Link to comment

nevada
Kohli is done. It's not due to lack of fire that he is unable to score big. Age and decline have made him a shadow of his peak self. beetle and ShoonyaSifar 2 Link to comment
ShoonyaSifar
Unlikely that he will go back to the same peak across formats. Prime reason is his insecurities as a captain since the 2019 WC debacle. He got spooked by Rohit's IPL success as a captain and the overshadowing him with the bat. The wedge between the two has only grown since then. All this has affected him. There is still a small chance of him having another 2-3 years of freak batting performances IF he gives up captaincy soon, else at best his career will go on till 2023 WC. Upto him if he wants his career to go the Dhoni way or the Sanga way in the 2nd half of his career. sorak and SRT100 1 1 Link to comment
Sean Bradley
I don't think he cared about rankings at first place. Virat has lost his focus after getting married, and it happens to allot of athletes. Our life changes, Priorities change, But I think he still has that one last bit of madness left in him. But for that he would need to give up captaincy, atleast in LOIs and focus entirely on his batting, and should learn to enjoy his game the way he did in his peak. Austin 3:!6
Kohli is done. It's not due to lack of fire that he is unable to score big. Age and decline have made him a shadow of his peak self.He is 32 officially. Sachin at that age got tennis elbow, came back and batted like a boss for 8 more years. If Virat really has started declining at the age of 32, that is alarming. But I dont think its decline. As many posters has mentioned, he just lost his focus after marriage and no longer has the same hunger he had until 2016. Now he has this 'I have nothing more to prove' attitude. Bigg Brother
People must be ultra-optimistic if they are hoping Kohli of 2016. Those 2-3 yrs (2016-18) were his best. Not only he has lost his mojo, he seems to be unaffected by it, He is masking it by giving statements like milestones and all doesnt matter as long as team is winning. But as many has posted, he seems to have lost that fire, He will continue to accumulate the runs but I doubt he will be able to thump his authority again as World's best batsman. The day that happens, he will undergo the same scrutiny and for all the right right reasons. His frailties in overseas tests has been pointed out for long and is an established fact. Anyways, the thread is about whether Kohli can regain his peak. I pointed out the reasons behind his string of average performances and factors which may hold his career back.
