Gautam Gambhir, the former India batsman, believes it will be a "shame" and "Indian cricket's misfortune" if Rohit Sharma isn't considered for the full-time white-ball captaincy going forward.

Gambhir was speaking on ESPNcricinfo's T20 Time Out soon after Sharma led Mumbai Indians to their fifth IPL crown, by beating the Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Dubai. Apart from leaving his mark as a captain on the field, Sharma killed off the chase by scoring a quickfire 68 to set up an easy win.

"If Rohit Sharma doesn't become India's captain, it's their loss, not Rohit's," Gambhir said. "Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I completely agree with that, but what are the parameters to judge a captain on who is good and who isn't? The parameters and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team to five IPL titles."

Gambhir had earlier in the tournament spoken of the need for Virat Kohli, India's current captain across formats, to be accountable for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are yet to win an IPL title in 13 seasons - Kohli has been captain for eight of those. The franchise have made the playoffs only three times under Kohli's captaincy - this year, they crashed out in the Eliminator to finish the tournament with five consecutive losses.

"We keep saying MS Dhoni is India's most successful captain. Why? Because he has won two World Cups and three IPLs," Gambhir said. "Rohit has won five IPL titles, he is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament. Going forward, it'll be a shame if he doesn't get India's white-ball or just T20 captaincy. Because he can't do much more than this. He can only help the team he captains to victories. So if he doesn't become India's regular white-ball captain, it will be their loss."

Gambhir also clarified this was by no means a suggestion that Kohli's captaincy was "poor", but merely an observation of who is more suited to the job, given they both started captaining their IPL franchise around the same time, in 2013. Kohli took over the captaincy mid-season that year from Daniel Vettori, while Ricky Ponting stepped down to hand over the reins to Sharma after a poor start.

Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles - in 2012 and 2014 - even suggested India could consider a split-captaincy model going forward, with Kohli continuing to lead in Test cricket and Sharma taking over the white-ball captaincy.

"They can also consider split-captaincy," he said. "No one is poor. Rohit has shown in white-ball cricket how big the difference is between his and Virat's captaincy. One player had led his team to five titles, the other hasn't won yet. I'm not saying this because Kohli is a poor captain. But he has received the same platform that Rohit has, so you have to judge both of them on the same parameters. Both have been captains in the IPL for the same length of time. I feel Rohit stands out as a leader."

Now more ex players have started talking about it. Even Vaughan said it last night. Kohli's aukaat as a captain is completely exposed but he is not going anywhere unfortunately.

good there is one more IPL before next Wc, high chance Mi will win that ...only way he can become captain is if he keeps winning and rest kohli poor captaincy will take care

Next t20 Wc is a great chance coz its in India but until captain changes we aint winning and only kohli can step down i dnt expect board or selectors to show that guts

Another idiotic statement by a first class idiot. Equating IPL to international cricket. Was Rohit Sharma not part of all those Indian teams which did not make it.

He is talking about leadership. Rohit has atleast won Asia Cup, Kohli has won ghanta. If winning IPL is that easy, why hasn't King Kohli hasn't won any?

Rohit had one off day in semis last year, if Virat had stood up, the story might have been different but the story always ends with distress in so far Kohli is concerned.

Was Rohit not part of Indian team in all those knockout losses?? from 2015 worldcup.

Kohli as Indian captain has done just fine, he is best batsman on this team He has flopped in knockout matches as a batsman.Untill you replace Kohli as a batsman in the team.He is the captain of the team.

There is nothing wrong with Kohli the captain. He needs to improve and show up in knockout matches.

See the diff between a great side and good side is someone will stand up some day, remeber aussies - some times it was symonds, bevan, even andy bichel, warne and lee ....A great captain never let nerves creep in such situation so one or other stands up .

Nidhas - DK can feel bad all he wants but he was send at right position, becoz he is best when there is nothing to think whereas DK was send at worst position in Semi final in 2019

In pressure games its kohli the captain whose body language puts negative energy in team , be it indian or RCB ....kohli is the same captain who has played clutch knocks under Dhoni in 2011 Wc, 2013 CT , 2014, 2016 t20 Wc......a good captain keeps it calm.

Same is with Mi, you look at them they came out all attacking whereas Indian team comes out nervous and even RCB......its intent and mindset  which is why kohli has ghanta.

Give same Devdutt padikkal n Saini to MI and see what players they ll become

Unfortunately BCCI has same retrograde thinking & such thinking has been responsible for mediocrity of Indian cricket over the years

It is not retrograde thinking at all. Magically Rohit Sharma does not become a greater batsman once he is made captain. Losing in knockout matches does not make team mediocre, they just are not getting over the line. Dhoni lost more tournaments than he won. Kohli captained two major tournaments and made it to finals and semis in other one. That too with very unbalanced team.

Kohli has excelled in T20 knockout matches, so it is not like he flops under pressure. He has just not able to repeat his magic with bat in 50 over knockout matches.

Nor magically Rohit Sharma could have solved India's number 4 problem if he was made captain.

I ll not rehash points which have been made ad nauseum about the frailties of Kohli's leadership. I ll just state that the unbalanced team & the number 4 problem you referred were mainly because of Kohli's haphazard captaincy & confused mindset.

Anyways we can agree to disagree here

Everyone knows this but an ex-cricketer especially a world cup winning player coming out and saying this is a refreshing thing compared to those in the star commbox who suck up to kohli. and this version of gambir saying this with due respect to kohli as a batsman and a test captain makes him all the more fun to listen to

there is nothing magical about identifying talent few years before wc and giving them consistent run in the team. it is the standard process. that is how kohli was groomed before 2011 wc. lack of vision is a legitimate criticism for a leader, idk how this sounds magical to you

The WC last year was a shambles. No clear middle order established before the WC with Kohli and his Cheerleader busy playing musical chairs during a tournament.

Kohli has run his course as captain especially in the limited over formats. Its not like the trophy cabinet is full so give an opportunity to someone else, possibly someone who has captained and won things.

Kohli became captain in odis 2017.It is not his fault if you are expecting him to be a miracle man.He has made test compete in all conditions prior to NZ series. He has made this fast bowling unit by backing them in all conditions.

He did groom Kuldeep and Chahal but Kuldeep suffered a meltdown in IPL and is not the same bowler since then. It is not his fault if players cannot recover from odd shelllacking.

Virats Under 19 Worldcup win is still his stand out feat as a Captain, this itself shows how piss poor he has been as a leader. He's still riding on the back of that under 19 win,  I think either the selectors are fools or doesn't have the baals to move him from captaincy. Kohli doesn't inspire as a leader, he hasn't grown mentally, he's an abusive loud mouth, and that's not a quality of a leader when 10 others in the field are looking upto you. The fact that he is regressing as a batsman is also an area of concern. If he has any shame he would voluntarily hand over the white ball captaincy to Rohit and continue to focus on his batting and lead only in Tests, till KL Rahul is ready for the leadership role in Tests.

We can always agree to disagree. I don't think Kohli the captain has not done any major wrong as an Indian captain  other than flopping in two big knock matches as a batsman. Every captain has his own views on how to lead the team. If Dhawan did not get hurt who knows how the world cup would have ended up.

He has excelled otherwise as a batsman in all formats after becoming captain.Captaincy is not a burden for him.He is the most fit player on the team  and has made Indian team very fit too by focussing on fitness.

People are ridiculous about him too. They made a big deal  of him smiling with Pakistani players after the CT 2017 is also big deal for some reason. He is playing a sport not going to war.
