Apparently Sundar not among top 6 batsman in current form for Indian team

Recommended Posts

Sundar's case is very curious one, He basically plays as bowler who can bat in t20s but has not batted well given the format and his position as he is not pinch-hitter, Now his Batting has been promising in tests but He is expected to contribute with bowl, too. I think he will get chances overseas when we will need to play spinner for namesake and pitch wont be assisting spinner, Otherwise he can go to first class and make his case strong as pure batsman by piling runs. He will be included in 4th test if Kuldeep gets to bowl & doesnt pick up wickets here in 2nd innings.

Jarrod Kimber drew an insightful parallel between Sundar and Ashton Agar. Agar was selected over Lyon and scored 90 odd batting at 9 which made Aus select him for the next test even though his bowling didn't light things up. Eventually Aus wisened to the fact that they need a bowler who pulls his weight as a bowler, and Agar was not that.

Likewise, Sundar is a nothing bowler as of now. If he's going to play as a bowling all rounder, he has to pull his weight as bowler.

Sundar was playing as a batting allrounder in tests. Batting at 7.

While Agar, batting at 9, was occupying a specialist bowler's slot.

Batting position, 7 or 9, isn't much of relevance here though, is it? It's role definition that is key. Sundar has batting potential but he is simply not the player India are looking for when Jadeja's missing. He's not the bowling AR India require. Axar is what this team needed and it is on show in this very match even with Axar failing with bat twice. He's fits the role requirement.

It can be Sundar, Ashwin and Axar, from 7 to 9, till the time Jadeja is back.

I am a big supporter of Kuldeep but we need both Axar and Sundar, for their bowling and batting, till Jadeja recovers ... as he provides Sundar's batting along with better bowling than Axar, in one package.

You and TM are basing Bowling of a 21 year old guy playing his 2nd test on One innings?! (He was bowled only one over in 2nd innings). The guy also had a catch dropped and the Buttler caught behind not given because of Kohli using up all DRS reviews.

Also, when you are talking about Role defenition, just look at how many overs Kuldeep has been bowled! This team needs only two fulltime spinners, the third one should be a batting allrounder who can bowl a handful of overs like what Kuldeep has been used. For this, Sundar is more apt.

Send him back to domestics

Gone are days when need to bring in any young player asap as we stink and desperate.  This is not 90s

Lately players come in after extensive A tours/FC games and 2 years at least of IPL under the belt.  Thats why gill and siraj for example hit ground running when hit team in oz.  They played against top international players for a few years and been to these foreign  countries and so no shock, in fact they know exactly whats coming both on and off the field.

We did exactly right thing making GIll wait and siraj.  They spent a lot of time waiting for their moment including being woth squad for a while traing with team and getting feel for it.

Sundar is raw and needs to go on A tours and pile up games in domestics.  When he ready comes in, till then see you later.

Even if a new tendulkar comes through now.  They will not and should not go straight to team India.  A tours/FC games and 2 years of IPL then moment comes.  Same for devdutt and jaiswal and others. Sep 22 is earliest they may make a squad of any kind and rightly so.  We have a system now and all players need to go through the process so dont get rough diamonds in team but polished guys ready to help team WIN!  Before they learnt 50% of how to play for international team while in team now we have reduced this to say 15% and the results reflect this!

ps I am the legend thats KING TENDULKAR looooooooooooool

The truth is that Kuldeep has barely bowled in this test.

He has batted twice with poor returns.

6 overs for 16 runs and no wickets.

Honestly if Kohli is not going to bowl him or he is not needed then I think picking him does not make any sense.

Either we go with another batsman or we play Sunder who is probably not as good as a bowler but can bat

Doesn't make my first XI...yet. But the kid has got a high ceiling when it comes to batting potential, after the way we saw Smith transform never rule out someone like Sundar from making it big as a specialist batsman. Just 21, he played U-19 WC as a 16 yo!!! Plenty of time to improve, hope he is made to play in top 5 for India A consistently and he learns the art of making big 100s.

As a red ball bowler he is so mediocre, does he even make it to his state team as a bowler?

He has a high ceiling as a batsman, but that needs to translate into First class numbers.. Also, the expectation is very different when he is looked at as a batsman.. He needs to show that he can score big with the bat.. He has played some clutch knocks in pressure situations, but can he score hundreds to make case to be a No. 6 is yet to be seen. He won't walk into the XI, but he can be tried out sporadically.. He needs to show his batting prowess with a big Ranji season when the domestic season gets going

Pandya or Sundar will replace Kuldeep as per news floating in for the Ahmedabad test. Depends on the wicket

We'll be in trouble if its Pandya, which would suggest that the pitch would be more seam/swing friendly as I assume Pandya may bowl at least some overs. Sundar should ideally come in if Kuldeep's being dropped & again the pitch should turn more than first Chennai test, nit as much as this test though!
