Dravid won more Test matches for us than Sachin, then I wonder why Sachin is being treated like God.
Poor second innings average means Sachin was not a match winner in crunch situations.

very good. he only struggled vs swing bowlers like anderson and fast swingers like bond. Although those pitches were atrocious. keep in mind. kalis dint have to play on such dreadful pitches in nz.

ALSO bear in mind kalis never played shane bond away from home. He only played him at home and averaged 66 in that game. 

 

 

SO excluding new zealand, kalis's average drops to a mediocre rahane overall average of

so in conclusion. I was wrong. kalis was better vs india compared to sachin against saffers. However against the rest of the field, sachin was the superior batsman. 

 

but overall as a package kalis is obviously better since he is an all rounder that averaged 31 vs the aforementioned top sides. 

 

AS a pure batsman, seems like tendulkar has the advantage. But this is discounting other factors like clutch ability, second innings average and ability to perform damage control duty when the player in question has to come in early to face the new ball due to poor opening performances by teammates. 

 

in terms of second innings performances, i would say kalis has a slight edge as he averages 50 in 4th innings.

Why Kallis wasn't rated highly. Phase of Kallis' career (As posted by someone else earlier).

 

First 6 years

Kallis averaged 41 in first 50 tests, so that also went against him creating his first impression. Most ATG show their greatness during first 50 tests, SRT, Lara, Viv or potential ATGs like Root, Williamson, Kohli or Root. Ponting (mid 40s) and Sanga (48) were attacking batsmen which helped them change impression when hit their peak.
 

First 6 years, many poor series, slow boring batting, nothing much to show except that 100 against against McGrath from 1995-2001.

 

2001-02

Then he goes to Zimbabwe and scores big. 388 unbeaten runs.
Then a good series in India but no hundred. 2 series against Aus, again no 100s.

Then Bangladesh series and again scores unbeaten 214.
After that 9 tests against Pakistan, SL, Eng and failures in both overseas tours of Eng and Pak with 1 100 in home tour.

 

2002-03
Then he hit a big series against WI with 700 runs. Those are his first 8 years of career, 71 tests.
During this phase he averaged in 30s against, Aus, Eng, Pak and SL.
Scoring 4k runs at avg of 41 against top 7 teams and that too at SR of 38 with just 7 100s meant he was just improving his reputation during later years as a batsman.

It's not difficult to see why he wasn't rated much. Of course he was just unstoppable during later years. But people initial impression of player remains for so long as cricket fans follow sports for decades.

 

Just like many batsmen who struggled during 1990-2002 and suddenly hit gold form in flattest era (2003-2013) of cricket, Kallis the batsman was one of the big time beneficiary of the that.

Look at those averages. He was avg batsman in most of the countries for first 8 years of his career. 3 away centuries and all this at slow SR. No wonder he wasn't rated highly.

kalis as a package is better because he can bowl and bat. he is a very good 5th bowler.

however, as a batsman alone, sachin is superior. I was wrong about it before. My general hatred towards sachin clouded my judgement. i do believe kalis wouldnt have average so high in drs, unbiased umpiring (cheating happens but to a lesser extent), no ball umpiring etc, better tech. 

he would still be great but not as effective. 

In saying that, the first name on my team sheet would be kalis purely cause he adds balance.

I’d take Kallis easily  over Tendulkar as an all round cricketer. Honestly it’s not even close.


in fact Dravid vs Sachin is a closer comparison

A Hyundai runs for 10 years, a Mercedes for 25.  Then you will have folks come along and pick the best handful of years of the Hyundai and compare them with the last couple of years of the Mercedes.  Not realizing that by even making that comparison they are shooting their own assertions in the foot.

You can buy benz but it will come with its own cost/emi. unless you are rich, you can't afford it much less pay for the better petrol and maintenance. And modern day benz comes with the same lifetime as hyundai. hyundai is better in indian cities than benz. somebody puts a scratch on it. no problem just leave them. Unless you are keeping with the joneses, you are better off with hyundai :nice:

Superior? Sachin is only Super Power batsman we have seen. If NOT then Sachin pribably pulled biggest con with 1+ billion Indian public , all players of his era and allmost half billion other cricket fans aliong with cricket Pundits. That too for over two decades.
