Is it the end of ODIs ?

Seems like through T20s, we have now an ideal format to spread the game and have a substitute to 90 min football. T20 also allows a weaker team to beat stronger team on the day. In some ways, it’s becoming like football World Cup where tactics, strategy, on the performance plus luck can pull you through. 
 

But with the kind of talent and tough competition we are seeing in T20, where everyone is in the game till last over, I wonder if there is any patience left for ODIs. Seems like a dead goose to me. It might be ideal time to pull the plug on it and protect the players. 
 

T20 and test. Seems like an ideal mix.

50 over world Cup is still the most anticipated and prestigious cricketing event of all by a country mile. As long as that remains the case, ODIs are going nowhere no matter how many times people sing the death tune.

Basically, there are now two major formats in Tests (legacy) and T20s (the new format) which is adapted by various leagues as well (increasing its popularity day by day) … ODI is likely to be restricted among subcon teams where ppl have more time and cricket is the major sport (but with so much cricket, BCCI may reduce ODIs too unless for 2nd string sides). ICC may do an event here and there to keep a revenue stream open in the short to mid term.

T20s are a terrible indicator of team quality/strength. 

 

There's a reason why its much harder for weaker teams to pull off an ODI upset than it is in T20s.

 

For this reason alone, T20s becoming the 'main' white ball format is disconcerting to me.

 

But even for someone like me, the reality is that the odds of me watching a full ODI are lower than watching a full T20.

T20 results are unpredictable. Also it is more often than not battathons.. Low quality hacks will make hay in this format. T20 should be restricted to leagues. Bowlers just have to be good enough for 4 overs. We don't get to see a lot of finer aspects of the game in T20.

if you had asked me this few years ago I would have got emotional as our childhood memories were mostly from these odi games.. but now I feel that teams should only play 50 over world cup and few odd games.

Yes and the end of cricket too. You play T20s, you win the toss and you won the game 9 out of 10 times.

 

Next time onwards, I will only show up to watch the toss and no need to watch the game.

Lottery games. 

Barring world cups no non associate team takes them seriously except Pakistan.

In Asia it is even worse with team chasing winning 90% of games.

To note, no fan of T20. Nor do I think it is a great barometer of quality. I see it just as more glorified version of Hong Kong sixes competition. 
 

But it’s here. We have a whole adult generation that has grown up on it. For a generation that wants min investment in terms of time and emotion, this is the thing. 
 

I believe the next ODI WC could be last one.

That's exactly what is happening now. ODIs are played sparingly. Not long ago, there used to be just 1 T20 game after the end of an ODI series. Now T20 is the dominant format.

T20 should be commercial and test should be tradition.

 

odi should be the wc format as it brings  best of both worlds to some extent.

 

outside of wc or maybe a champions trophy once in a while, no bilateral odi should be held going forward.

What is the need of 100 i have no idea? Then there is T10. Just reducing overs don't require any innovative mind. ECB is just getting away with whatever they want.  Rohit sharma has played the highest T20I matches in T20 history. He more often than not opened the innings. His average stay at the crease is 19 balls. 

If you go further down the order it is even less for other batsman.  It is like reducing foot ball  30 minute game and reducing Wimbledon to 1 set.  You want to see more of good batsmen.

no one watches 5 days of Tests too
