Trichromatic
@putrevus claimed that SRT was just lucky to debut early and he couldn't have played early in this side. Leaving aside non-cricketing reasons, was young SRT good enough to find a place in this batting line up? Teen SRT? This was SRT at age of 19. Popular Post raki05
I think he was extremely lucky and fortunate enough to born in the era of meek bowling attack of wasim/waqar/imran/marshal/hadlee/botham/mcderomot/ambrose/walsh/donald/polack. Had he been debut now Hasan ali/Ameer/Starc/rabada/bolt/holder would have made him cry for debut run. Hell Raiser, Number, Turning_track and 13 others 1 1 12 1 1 Link to comment
Deleted_User_1
SRT absolutely deserved to play in international cricket when he debuted. If someone is denying the fact that SRT was not a far more gifted cricketer and technically sound batsman at 16 than Kohli was, they are deluded. Has Virat surpassed him in tests yet? Hell no. But if Virat stays in the game for another 10 years, he has a very good chance of doing that. Given how much value he brings to team in terms of stepping up his performance is a true sign of strong leadership. SRT was miserable during his time as captain, Virat revels in it. Technique and talent alone does not make one great. Look at Steve Smith and all the success he has had with that horrible batting style. I think Kohli is a good combination of technique (which he has shown willing to evolve), grit, determination and the ability to contribute when the team needs him. That is the hallmark of a MVP. I think in that regard he may surpass SRT in a few years if he keeps up the performance. BlueBee, Stradlater, kruiser and 4 others 1 5 1 Link to comment
Straight Drive
Averaging 44 at age of 19 is tremendous. The likes of Rahul, Ajinkya, Shikhar, Vijay all have career average between 40 - 42 even at very higher ages and they are struggling to even maintain that average of 42. Whereas Sachin took his average to 54 as he grew up. He is a very good example of success at young age where majority cannot achieve, be it any profession. Also, a very good example of someone who manages to use the immense talent, hard work, experience at young ages to improve upon the achievements as he aged higher. raki05
People forget a simple fact that during most part of Sachin career even Zim ( Flowers brothers/campbell/goodwin/blignaut/brandis/streak/jonshon) and SL( desilva/jaysurya/mahela/sanga/vaas/murlitharan) were not that meek like current aus and sa team who simply surrender in overseas condition. To win in SL and Zim was a bigger achievement. Yup it would have been really tough for sachin to perform against scintillating attack of chigumbra/mpofu/ngarva/tripano who defended 8 run in last over against ATG Dhoni or against Dhamika/Suranga/Akhila against whom Dhawan looks like bradman. Austin 3:!6
OP are you serious? That young Sachin was a beast and better than any batsman in the current team bar Kohli. You should see his innings at Perth, Sydney and Old Trafford as a 17 year old. The current players can only dream of playing such innings even in their 30s Edited August 7, 2018 by Austin 3:!6 Straight Drive, diehardpacer, raki05 and 5 others 2 6 Link to comment
PBN
Of course, Tendulkar was lucky to debut for India at such a young age. Not about talent but these days with the amount of u19 and Ind A tours, even a 22-25 year old batsman find it difficult just to get selected by the selectors and in the final 11..reason given is he needs to develop in Ranjis Edited August 7, 2018 by PBN UrmiSinhaRay 1 Link to comment

sandeep
Tendulkar had a bit of luck that there was an open slot in the middle order. But he forced his way into the team, and stayed there, because he was simply that good. The guy scored centuries or 85+ in his first tour all over the world - England, Australia, NZ, WI. there SA wasn't a cricket nation in his early days. When a young batsman who has just made the team demonstrates that level of batting quality and performance, his age doesn't matter. UrmiSinhaRay and Stradlater 2 Link to comment

Debatable. Mcdermott, Hughes, Reiffel was equally good bowling attack as Harris, Hilfenhaus,Siddle etc. But since Sachin was only 17 years kid that time and went on to century (which Kohli failed), I rate that knock more. Forever Indian
Tendulkar was lucky that Kohli wasn't captain at that time. Else even with a Bradman like domestic record, he would have probably be asked to play a T20 against Zim to be dropped after first sign of failure. Shunya
Whatever Sachin did after the debut was great and we were lucky that it all worked out well after couple of years. The main point is what was Sachin's record before getting selected and how was it different from other domestic players? Its like Prithvi Shaw playing in SA and Eng tours. For sure we know that is never going to happen in these times. UrmiSinhaRay and chewy 1 1 Link to comment
