He's not suitable for slips. Basically he doesn't follow the basics of a slip fielder like crouching, feet apart etc..

He just has poor technique as a slip fielder.. for a start, he has his hands on his knees, which is a very poor relaxed position for a slip fielder.. 

the best position as a slip fielder is to have hands cupped in a catching position and bending low to be ready for a low catch.

Kohli has improved his catching overall. But he has to stand infront of the wickets not behind.

Kohli was never a slip fielder to begin with....most players I have seen are either good to begin with in their career or they just end up been mediocre slip fielder ( Vengsarkar, dhawan, Murali ).

Kohli is definitely a good fielder in outfield like Ajay jadeja was but just like Kohli the original Jaddu was a disaster in slip cordon ( fortunately he didn't play too many tests).

VVS laxman I think was the greatest slip fielder followed by Dravid but even likes of sachin,ganguly were much better slip fielders than what we have now.

His drop catch percentage must be 30%+ with a few missed chances in almost every series. If it was someone else, esp a young player, Kohli, Shastri, MSK Prasad all would have criticised the player publicly and dropped him irrespective of his performances. But those rules apply only if you are under 25 (and not in good books of Kohli).
 

Also, the thread has a sense of déjà vu. Could well have been true for 2015-16. We are back to the same old home cycle where we dominate all the teams. These wins hide lots of cracks in the team including the shambolic catching. These cracks  open up properly when we play stronger teams away from home and almost invariably we are found wanting.

 

Same story is being repeated with the TM looking at short term results and having zero vision or investing in future to tackle next away cycle challenge. Results in those away tests will not be very different again.
