• Pujara got 4, 12*, 9 in the three innings in England so far while Rahane scored 5 and 1. Gavaskar, however, pointed out that none of the Indian batters barring openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have been scoring runs consistently.

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was not pleased with the continuous criticism meted out towards experienced Indian batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Both Pujara and Rahane have not been at their best in the last couple of years. Considered to be the pillars of India’s middle-order along with captain Virat Kohli, Rahane and Pujara have been averaging in the 20s this year.

There were a lot of talks about Pujara and Rahane’s place in the Indian side ahead of the England series but both of them managed to hold on to their positions for the first two Tests without giving the desired results.

Pujara got 4, 12*, 9 in the three innings in England so far while Rahane scored 5 and 1. Gavaskar, however, pointed out that none of the Indian batters barring openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have been scoring runs consistently.

“He was the highest run-scorer for India at the WTC final with 49. So nobody else has scored runs in this period, to be honest, but questions have been asked only about two cricketers. They are low-profile cricketers. They are not going to rip their shirt off and create a scene (if they are dropped),” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports Network.

Much was expected from Rahane and Pujara after Rohit (83) KL Rahul (129) put India in a commanding position in the second Test match against England. But both of them got out cheaply in identical fashion to James Anderson. Pujara pushed at a delivery to end up nicking it for 9. Rahane fell on his first ball of Day 2 for 1 off 23.

Gavaskar said if these two experienced players are getting out in the same manner match after match then questions must be asked of the support staff too.

“Just let Ajinkya Rahane play. Yes, if he does not score runs here there is cause for concern but that cause for concern has to be regarding his technical abilities, with Pujara as well. The way he has got out in Australia playing down the wrong, being beaten by the outswinger nothing has changed as far as that is concerned. So what is happening? Who is the one to take care of it? Not just with Pujara. There’s a staff there. If you are getting out in the same manner, then there is something wrong not just with your technique but also the guys who are supposed to help you,” Gavaskar added.

Who else is playing as a batsmen other than Rohit and Rahul in the team.

Both Pujara and VC are in their mid 30s, been failing for years yet lays the blame on the coaching???

 

They are old and reflexes are gone. Means they are done and need to be replaced.

 

This toleration of mediocrity is exactly why won no major competition in the past decade.

These ex-cricketers and senior cricketers think too much from the point of view of individuals and not from the point of view of the team.

 

Why not pick or support the picking of a team that has maximum chance of winning the test series ... instead of crying over individual cricketers who may or may not be dropped in the future.

 

P.S -- Mr.Gavaskar ... Pant and Jadeja have been scoring runs too, not just Rohit and Rahul.

India need to look at all format players.

 

Players like Pujara and Rahane are 1 format players, this results in them being out of form, rusty due to lack of cricket. Being out of form in your 30's is a recipe for disaster.

 

The reason a player plays all formats is due to the quality and skill level of player. Hence India should be picking players who can play all formats, as by definition they are more skilled than single format players. (In the modern era).

 

A great example of this is Rohit Sharma, most people on ICF made fun of his test credentials

apart from a few backers on ICF, now we can clearly see who can actually play, the cream always rises to the top as they say.

 

Going forward after England Tour, the batting line should be something like this:

KL

Gill

Kohli

SKY (worth a try)

Yes they are but they are not in the team only for their batting. Even average results from them are acceptable.
He is talking about the batsmen in the team and carefully avoided one name.

When multi-discipline players are scoring runs too but specialist batters aren't then it further highlights the ineptness of these batsmen.

Let's say someone in power told Gavaskar to pick a team for Test 3 or the next 3 tests.

 

Condition is ... his chosen team will be played.

 

If the chosen team loses then his lucrative commentary contract will be terminated for ever.

 

If the chosen team wins then his remuneration. will be doubled.

Kohli has the worst numbers among the big 3. How come he flies under the radar despite this? All three have been in terminal decline for a while now. Their aukad has gone from "let's hope his form turns around and he scores big again" to "this is embarrassing, can he scrap together a 50 at-least?".  We need a brand new middle order. Enough courtesy has been extended to these legends who are on course to screwing up another series with lackluster batting.

What's the combined output these 3 are giving?  Kohli looked out 3-4 times in his brief inns.  Pujara has lost any reflexes that exist & he is still standing on his legs is a scientific miracle.  Rahane is well Rahane. 

 

You bring any other guy Shaw SKY Mayank Vihari they won't do worse than them..  But win you matches at home with ease.  These guys can't even bat at home ffs.
