Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir has lambasted skipper Virat Kohli's excessively reactive demeanour as a leader.

Gambhir lambasted Kohli for his excessively reactive temperament and in-your-face attitude at all times as a huge chink in the Indian captain's armor. The 40-year-old ex-India batter criticised Kohli for his leadership demeanour during the two matches that Team India have played so far in the T20 World Cup.

In a chat with ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir explained: "New Zealand was exactly in the same position as India today. So they had an equal amount of pressure. I mean, it starts with the leader as well. [For New Zealand] it starts with Kane, the calmness. You don't have to be on the face all the time. You don't have to show your emotions [always], sometimes just your positivity and calmness can be equally positive [for] the group as well. Just by reacting to everything doesn't mean that you are more passionate than someone else," said the former Indian opening batsman.

Gambhir highlighted that the pressure on India and New Zealand was similar with regards to their position in the tournament as he argued that despite such a situation, Kiwi skipper Williamson's calmness had a more positive impact on his teammates than Kohli's enthusiasm had on Indian players.

"Kane doesn't react to everything but look at the calmness. Sometimes in these crunch games, it's your calmness that's much more important than probably your enthusiasm or reaction to everything," added Gambhir.

It’s a person characteristic. I don’t know what Gambhir is taking about. He could point out many other reasons like rallying troops, bringing best out of youngsters, decision making, field placement which kohli seriously lacks or doesn’t has property strategy.

He is. He won us 2 WCs like a clutch batsman under immense pressure in 2007 final against Pak and 2011 against SL in the final.

Agree.. Although he doesn't come across as a calm person, he has certainly delivered in clutch situations.. Top scorer for the team in two WC finals and he captained his side to two IPL trophies from the 4-5 years that he was captain.. He also stepped down and made way for others when his form failed as a player/captain

GG is nitpicking and merely advancing his preference. We have to respect every individual's personality and judge leadership based on outcomes. Kohli would fall short on many outcomes parameters (tactics on field, ability to motivate, team selection, etc.), judge him on that.

Examples of current bubbly leaders include Modi, Putin, etc., and then you also have a relatively calm Biden. The different qualities do not make one better over the other.

I guess it’s pile on time. One can understand when fans do it. But former cricketers? Somehow, they act like they are perfect and take pot shots when a guy is down. The same feistiness would have been hailed as a great quality if we had won. Kohli has been an in your face cricketer since the start. Gambhir is acting like this is new. Also, his comparison of pressure for Williamson and Kohli is a false one. An Indian captain and team will always be under greater scrutiny. They will get crazy amounts of praise when they win and have rocks thrown at their homes or effigies burnt when they lose. Williamson won’t have tv channels, radio stations, social media analyzing his every move. Williamson could probably walk around his neighborhood and go to a grocery store without much trouble. And he won’t be hassled even if his team loses 10 games in a row. So, not even close.Yes, this was a bad tournament but overall I think Kohli and for that matter the rest of the Indian team do a great job with handling pressure. Also, I don’t question their desire to do well. They just got beat by teams that played a lot better on the day.

Gambhir is spot on. Kohli is an overacting buffoon, a tool of his PR gang with his in your face acts and gestures supposed to be conveying his "passion". He needs to be removed from captaincy in all formats, pronto!

And dropped from the team IF he continues to be a nuisance for the new captain and coach (which is what I foresee, his big fat ego and cronies around him will never let him understand how big a failure he's been as a leader)

Gamhir has a point. When you have a captain like Williamson/Dhoni who are always calm, it is reassuring for players. Clown wears his emotions on his sleeve. One can easily make out when he's worried or when he's on the ascendency. The demeanour throughout this world cup was one of a failure and the team performed just like that.
