context is key here.he is a rhythm player,the pandemic has severely curtailed his form because he thrives on continuity and that is missing .i feel the he will get back into form with all the cricket which is lined up for us in the coming months.

The big problem with him is he completely vanishes from series as a batsman. 2017 Australian series, and NZ series. He did not have any 100s in any formats last year. Is it due lack of continuity.He did score some runs in second ininngs of last test.

Form is temporary, decline is permanent. He is already at Dhongi level in T20. Test cricket hasn't been too kind to him either.

Don't care..  He is not the same force..  People expecting him to perform at his peak are delusional.  Also highly unlikely he'll average 50 by the end of his career.

I don't think he is as good as Tendulkar and Gavaskar in tests. He is similar to Ponting.

Extend it to start of Aus series in 2018.

 

16 tests, 26 innings, 1016 runs@44, 3 100s, 5 50s. 13 other batsmen have outscored him (including Pujara and Rahane, with Mayank being neck to neck)

 

If you think, these are normal numbers and everything is alright, well nothing much to say.

 

Incidentally, his decline as a captain also started after that Aus series win. Perhaps became too cocky with 'we are as good as great sides of WI/Aus' trope, bungled big time in the lead up to the WC and has only gone downhill since then

My impression is that, after the 2018-19 Australian tour, Kohli has become less dominating as a batsman.  

 

This seems more like an mindset issue. 

 

He just hangs on these days. A notable exception was the 2nd innings in the 1st test, and he scored 70 odd there.

 

Needs to go back to dominating bowlers.

He has never been a dominating bta in test cricket

He doesn't have the range of strokes for that

 

People who think he is as good as Sachin are dreaming

Also there comes a point when captaincy starts to take a toll on player which is when a captain is reaching his shelf life . Best thing for Kohli the batsman wud be to leave captaincy

Easier said that done. It's not just tests but in ODIs and T20s also, he isn't the same match winner. 50-60s and out has been a norm since the WC. 

 

Captaincy for over 6 years has been taking a toll. Should hand it over to someone else and go back to the batsman he was destined to be. Else he will end up with a sub 50 average and a notch below Sunny, Sachin and Dravid level (at par with Viru and slightly above VVS, Pujara and perhaps Azhar)

He will score but he is our best batsman or not- debatable. Should consider retiring from  t20s after wt2021. No need to drag it, He isnt the same force as he was in t20s during 2012-2016.. He will score in ODIs-Tests eventually, not worried about that.

That was the legacy of Tendulkar. He kept his form up through out his career. Everyone has ups and downs but not many can claim to have played 24 years and maintained a 50+ average. Heck if he retired early he could have a 55+ (if he retired after the England and/or Aus tour(s) after the WC 2011) and as high as a ~57 average (if he retired after WC 2011). Gavaskar only played 16 years. Tendulkar played 2 years too many.

 

There is no way Kohli will play 20 years. He will do well to keep a 50+ average. A long way to go for someone who can’t sweep or play off the backfoot.
