Only important people are criticised, Ajinkya Rahane has said, dismissing concerns that the talk around his form might have had any impact on his game. Rahane has averaged 27.36 in 13 Tests since the start of 2020.

Will we finally see a big series (not 1 good inning per series) from Rahane now?

The last series we saw a series tying century from him.  He scored a decent 50 in T2.  But yes, he has a tendency to have one or couple of good innings per series.  Not good enough.

 

He needs to put up at least a couple of 80+ scores if not 100s, in the remaining 3 tests.  I hope he will.

I hope so, but I don't think it will happen. He has a tendency to get out to soft dismissals more and more

He's VC, ICC mandates that players are available for certain number of minutes in press conference for questions.  IF he's asked how do you feel about criticism, pressure etc, what else is he supposed to say.  

 

"No sir, yes sir, I am so bad at batting, I should just kill myself"?  

 

Criticize the guy for his poor batting, his inconsistency.  But there's nothing wrong with what he has said.

This is pretty much what I did. I criticised Rahane for self-proclaiming  himself as "important people" inspite of a dismal show with the bat for past couple of years. Reeks of "senior players are invincible" kind of mentality.

Rahane is humble, unassuming, genuine and likable. That makes one want to give him a longer rope. 

 

When he led India to victory in Aus with a 2nd string side, he was still the same calm, composed and humble guy. 

 

No OTT celebrations or  obnoxious conduct.  He did not beat his own trumpet about this achievement in Aus or show entitlement.

 

Rahane ko 2-3 khoon maaf.

No 5 is an important position, which makes or breaks an inning so of course when more is expected from No 5, people are going to talk about player occupying the spot not Rahane alone.

that statement is a self inflating remark as someone mentioned above... he needs to consistently deliver to make such talk.

 

Seeing the performance of Pujara/Rahane over last 2 years, it would have been better if India had a succession plan for these two and should have tried one of the candidates in this series as a logical point for the next WTC cycle. I hope they try Prithvi Shaw in the next test
