Scrap ODIs permanently; it is tiring for players: Akram

It's ODI which suits scoring rate of most batsmen, and neither heavy on bowler's body nor unforgiving.

Ask all 20-25 year old cricketers which format would they like to debut? Opinions from past players don't matter.

Already ran several articles on this after Stokes retirement

Not the first time obituary was written for One dayers.  I won't say other formats are better. Just that the leagues generate more income than international cricket. SA league is the new one. Eventually members of ICC will cave in.  There was a period when it was feared ODIs would replace Tests. Now Tests are getting more popular while leagues are taking over ODIs.

I agree. ODIs were introduced in the 1970s for economic reasons only. It doesn't have the prestige of test matches. And now T20s have dwarfed ODIs in the economics and popularity, making it obsolete.

Only thing going of ODIs is that the most prestigious tournament by far in cricket is played in the ODI format.

ODIs have more time for ads. Also whole day worth of fun for fans at the stadium. But post COVID this has changed. It still has a space. But if we strictly forfeit ODI certain type of players will never have a career in shorter format. Many players are even the good ones are unsuitable for T20. Say Root, Smith. They will be reduced to playing Tests which will be a travesty.  T20 despite the popularity at league level is a garbage format at international level. You just don't have to be a very good cricketer. You just need specific skills that works for limited period of time.

The Two Ts of cricket -> Tests & T20s

Post the upcoming T20 WC, we could see some interest in ODIs because of the 2023 WC. However, if the excitement of the ODI WC is similar (or even less than) to an IPL, which takes place every year, it could accelerate the process of limiting or even discontinuing ODIs.

why not have more players for different format, every format has its own charm

ODI is a mix of test and t20 - its fun to see both surviving and onslaught as the format allows enough time to both

Probably this is the way forward. Playing all three formats will burn out any player.

Good points. ODIs were once my favorite format too. But nowadays they feel like extended T20s. 3 formats are 1 too many for the sport.

Biggest thing in T20's favour is that it takes a little over 3 hrs to complete which is just within the attention span that people have nowadays.

Also the best way to 'grow' cricket is through T20s. Newer nations can think about beating established in a T20 match but it's impossible in tests and very unlikely in ODIs. T20s also provide a closer contest compared to other formats.

I think that's where players will be restricted to 2 formats max.
Playing 3 formats is obviously a burn, but on the flip side, now there is a possibility for more and more young cricketers to come up and showcase their skill.

Though as a downside, countries like NZ which has a small pool of players might suffer.

Need to make odi's more bowler friendly. Better pitches instead of flat pancakes and maybe go back to one ball rule and bring reverse swing back into play. Evenly balanced games where scores of around 250 are the norm and the chasing team finds it a challenge to score those runs. These 300+ odi scores these days look like extended t20's and it gets boring really quick.

ODI seems fun vs strong sides...  Actually format could be gun as Tests are still watchable.  And ODIs are somewhere in between.

Post T20 WC no one will give a crap about T20s as well.

Both ODI WC & Champions Trophy are returning & FTP means Tri series are back on the cards too.
